New Newsletter Editor

As the new incoming newsletter editor I would first like to thank John Timmons for his sterling work on this communication since its inception in May 2005 and building it up into a regular monthly feature for the wound healing community in the UK.
As a TVN in practice I always appreciated having the news arrive without me having to do any work to get the update so I intend to keep that element of convenience intact. I am considering developing some new ideas for the newsletter perhaps with some regular information slots and would be delighted to hear from any readers who have any thoughts on what they would find useful and like to see in the future.
Once again thank you John and all the best in taking over the editorship of the Wounds UK journal.

You can contact me on andrew.kingsley@wounds-uk.com with news, views, items and irritations, it is all welcome!

Andrew Kingsley

EWMA Meeting Report in brief

The blazing Glasgow sunshine welcomed over 1500 delegates and industry staff to Scotland last week as EWMA came to town. As a Glaswegian this was an excellent chance for the international experts to see Scotland at its best. The conference theme was 'Evidence Consensus and Driving the Agenda Forward'

The EWMA programme was full of interesting and thought provoking presentations from a range of established and new presenters. The opening plenary session set the scene with a searching examination of how to assess quality of evidence and how to move practice forward using available evidence.

A number of satellite symposia were held with varying themes explored, central to the Smith and Nephew symposium was the need to make wound healing a priority in Europe. KCI invited a patient to discuss his experience with VAC therapy which proved a very popular session. Molnlycke, Coloplast and Lohmann & Rauscher examined the patients' experience of pain in chronic wounds, which has become a major issue in recent years.

A number of key sessions examined a huge range of topics including the role of oxygen in wound healing, Lymphoedema, pressure ulcers and atypical wounds.

There were also a large number of free papers and posters being presented demonstrating a huge range of work which is being done throughout Europe in this field.

As always there was a lot of information to absorb and I am sure many delegates be inspired by some of the studies presented.

New documents to be aware of are the upcoming release of the 2nd International Consensus Document on the Diabetic Foot due for launch on 12th May, and two hard copy documents made available at the conference a EWMA position document on Topical Negative Pressure in Wound Management and a WUWHS Consensus Document on Wound Exudate and the Role of Dressings. I am sure the latter two will be made available soon on respective websites for download.

A new book from Christine Moffatt on Compression Therapy in Practice was launched by Wounds UK at the conference which will make an excellent source book for TVNs, students of leg ulcer healing and chronic oedema management and as a course text.

Call for Tissue Viability Nurses to Carry out a UK Wide Audit of Chronic Wounds

With many Tissue Viability Nurse posts under threat there has been a call for TVN's in the UK to carry out an audit of chronic wounds in order to gauge the scale of the problem. Such an audit would be pivotal in providing the information which could protect tissue viability posts and importantly protect patients from what could be a poor quality service. These issues have been raised in the past but it would seem that in some areas the situation is getting worse.
