WUK Summer Conference

You could tell it was Wimbledon fortnight at the Wounds UK Summer Conference in Leeds on the 27th June on account of the weather……and by the strawberries and cream served at the pre-conference buffet dinner! An audience determined to make the most of their educational time braved the rained lashed North despite the difficulties presented to travel in the region. The audience enjoyed an expanded programme over last year with 3 conference halls running simultaneously and with informative sponsored seminars the evening before the main event from Biofisica and Synergy. Biofisica reported interim results on their Posifect RD outcomes assessment programme research, and Synergy focused on sharing progress with their Exsudex continuous topical negative pressure drainage system. The exhibitors with a true display of British grit managed to overcome the inclemency, despite in some cases having vans and equipment stranded by flooding, to put on an excellent show much appreciated by the delegates.

2nd Wounds UK Awards

A glittering night out in the heart of London was the setting for the 2007 WUK Awards Ceremony on 8th June. A hot night in Leicester Square set the scene for the celebration of excellence in our world of wound care. A champagne reception kicked off the evening, followed by a fabulous dinner with acrobatic artistes performing between courses on stage and above the diners. Bear Grylls ex British Special Forces and survival expert of Born Survivor TV fame who in 1998 became the youngest Britain to climb Mt Everest, (and that after intense rehabilitation for a back broken in 3 places from a parachuting accident) transfixed the audience with a breathily delivered, exciting and motivational after dinner speech. Then with Bear still on stage to announce and present the Awards the main event of the evening unfolded. Thirteen Awards were made and the winners were:-

Smith and Nephew Wound Systems Award - Caroline Dowsett with a paper entitled-' Does providing education and training on the concept of Wound Bed Preparation and the TIME framework improve community nurses knowledge and practice in managing patients with chronic wounds?'

WUK Burns and Plastics Award - Stuart Enoch - on the 'Evaluation of cellular response differences between mucosal and skin fibroblasts to explain this differential wound healing outcomes'.

Ark Diabetic Foot Ulcers Award - Samantha Haycocks, Paul Chadwick - with a practice development paper on 'Sharp debridement of the diabetic foot: the development of informed consent

KCI Innovations in Primary Care Award - Andrew Melling, Shahzad Ather, Deborah Whetter, David Leaper with research on 'Post discharge surveillance of surgical site infection'.

Convatec Innovations in Hospital Wound Care Award- Helen Shoker with her exploration into the subject of ''Value Added' Quantifying the cost to a tissue viability service'.

Urgo Innovations in New Technology Award - Peter Vowden and Marco Romanelli with a paper on 'Amelogenins in hard-to-heal ulcers'

3M Leg Ulcers Award - Claire Collins on the 'National audit of the management of venous leg ulcers'.

Talley Surgical Wounds Award - Andrew Melling, Senthil Kumar, Deborah Whetter, Elizabeth Baker, David Leaper for research on the 'Efficacy of antibiotics versus perioperative wound warming in wound infection prophylaxis after breast surgery

WUK Pressure Ulcers - Claire Morris with a practice development piece about developing an audit tool based on recently devised performance indicators to provide the mechanism for reviewing the quality of everyday care

Activa Lymphoedema and Chronic Oedema Award - Brenda King with a paper on 'The implementation of a community in-patient Tissue Viability bed.

Hermal Dermatology Award - Sheila Robertson exploring 'Educating child care workers in the prevention of skin cancer'

Molnlycke Innovations in Primary Care -Ellie Lindsay for her work on patient involvement in the 'Development of the Leg Club'

The final and most prestigious award the Smith and Nephew sponsored WUK Major Contribution Award was given to Vanessa Jones for her ground breaking and tireless work educating our specialty.

The evening rounded off with some serious dancing to lose the calories collected from dinner before we spilled out onto the street at 2am, a still warm and lively night in the centre of London's theatre-land.

Congratulations to all the winners and to those who received highly commended honours. It was an excellent field this year with a wide subject matter showing how the field is moving forwards. Wounds UK would like to thank all the entrants who took the time and trouble to enter. Next time why not go for the cup double by entering your abstract for an oral paper or poster for Harrogate 2007 and then re-enter the work for the Wounds UK Awards 2008.

Talley Group to launch "next generation" negative pressure wound therapy

Talley Group Ltd is to pioneer its own negative pressure wound therapy range.

The "next generation" of products will build on proven technology, offering patients faster healing and higher comfort levels.

The move reinforces the Group's 50 years of experience in pressure ulcer prevention and therapy, and underpins its role as the UK's largest privately owned specialist.

Talley's Medical Division entered the newly emerging negative pressure market last year, in association with Blue Sky of the USA. The treatment uses a pump to provide localised negative-pressure, thus draining the wound.

Talley will use its latest technologies, including 3D modeling, CAD software, and advanced surface mount electronics, to develop a new power unit and canister to lead the market with unique features and benefits.

Operations Manager Kevin Mearns said: "Published clinical studies have shown the value of this new cost-effective technique, and with our cutting-edge technology and design experience we are ideally placed to meet customers' needs."

CEO Chris Evans added: "We were the first in the UK to offer real choice in negative pressure wound therapy, and truly understand the requirements for the next generation of products.

"Customers will see a seamless transition to the new product range, and I am confident we will yet again deliver state of the art, reliable, products providing real savings to both the UK NHS and the private sector."

Following the UK launch, the range will also be available in Europe.

Hospital Episode Statistics online. Last month I had a look at leg ulcers so I couldn't resist looking up pressure ulcers this time around. Decubitus ulcers are listed under 'Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissues'. In 2005 - 06 in England there were 2186 admissions directly for decubitus ulcers of which 1578 were emergency admissions. Bed days for these cases amounted to 83,053, so now let anyone say TVNs are not 'worth it'!

NICE to know

Nice have released guidance on faecal incontinence in adults, the quick reference guide can be found at http://guidance.nice.org.uk/CG49 . Skin care is mentioned in the quick reference guide, albeit briefly, which may be a useful business case addition for those of you engaged in persuading your organisations to fund decent modern products for prevention of faecal associated skin damage.

For anyone interested in vascular surgery there are two interventional procedure guidance documents issued in May 2007 for 'Lower limb deep vein valve reconstruction for chronic deep venous incompetence' http://guidance.nice.org.uk/IPG219 and 'Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy for varicose veins' (http://www.nice.org.uk/IPG217).

Consultation is underway during July on an atopic eczema in children guideline. Information on the list of stakeholders and how to make a contribution is contained on the following link, http://www.nice.org.uk/IPG217 Pressure ulcer staging
The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel in the USA have released new definitions based on current research and expert opinion 'to achieve accuracy, clarity, succinctness, clinical utility, and discrimination between and among the definitions of other pressure ulcer stages and other types of wounds. Deep tissue injury was also added as a distinct pressure ulcer in this updated system.' The article by Black J et al (2007) (see reference list below) has been released in Urologic Nursing and can be found on Medscape at http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/556483

Chronic wound pain
According to Heather Wallace chairman of charity Pain Concern persistant pain, which is that which lasts over 3 months, affects one in 7 in the UK (Wallace H 2007 Living with pain. Health Director. Page29. June edition). Pain is often under treated, she says, because it is not recognised as a condition in its own right. The World Health Organisation recognised pain treatment as a human right in 2005. You might like to check out the Pain Concern website on www.painconcern.org.uk and click on the chronic wound pain for further information.

Summertime and the living is wet
Not quite the refrain from the classic George Gershwin tune from the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess, but maybe there is a silver lining to all this cloud we've been experiencing. It would seem that sunburn rates are increasing in the USA and no doubt worldwide, and we all know the consequences to skin health. Reported in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/557917?src=mp) sunburn prevalence among all adults in the USA increased from 31.8% in 1999 to 33.7% in 2004. One good sunny weekend and all the good intentions with the slipping, slopping and slapping sun protection routine are forgotten. So remember get out the high factor SPF now, the weather will cheer up soon!
