Wounds UK Conference

This years Wounds UK Conference in Harrogate has proven a huge success. The combination of an innovative program, excellent symposia and the biggest exhibition ever staged was hugely popular with both the delegates and the industry representatives.

There was a very holistic feel to the conference program, with a good balance of specialist and generalist knowledge being achieved. With many of the big names in wound care presenting there was something for everyone at this event. Keith Harding, Rose Cooper, Jan Apelquvist, Grish Patel, Andrew Kingsley, Jacqui Fletcher were among the top names involved this year.

The current political climate was also central to some of the symposia (Smith and Nephew and KCI) presented with the current issues in tissue viability being discussed. A special meeting for tissue viability nurses was convened by Jacqui Fletcher to discuss recent events. This meeting was well attended which is a measure of the concern among TVNS. We hope to report further on the outcome of this meeting in this newsletter.

There was large number of free papers and posters from all over the UK, Ireland and Europe, which demonstrated how far we have come as a speciality. The variety of topics covered was excellent and all the authors/researchers should be congratulated.

As always the Gala Dinner was a huge success with over 1000 people in attendance enjoying an excellent meal with some very conservative dancing until 11pm.

Roger Black rounded off an excellent 3 days with an inspirational presentation which brought home his personal motivation for his achievements in athletics over the years.

This year there was an excellent attendance at the conference, with numbers in excess of 800. It is without doubt the delegates who make a conference a success, with the level of debate and participation in all sessions demonstrating unrelenting enthusiasm for the subject matter. Wounds UK would like to extend a huge thank you to all the delegates and industry sponsors for helping to make this event such a success.

Wounds Essentials Roadshows

Following on from the success of the Wounds Essentials Journal, Wounds UK are launching Wounds Essentials Roadshows. These roadshows have been developed by the Wounds UK Team in association with Madeleine Flanagan and are aimed at providing education in the key aspects of wound, leg ulcer and pressure ulcer care. Wounds UK will provide the speakers if you and/or your trust provide a suitable venue. Numbers and the length of the day can be altered to suit local need.

The presentations for the road show follow closely the content of the journal. The first presentations are Wound assessment, Surgical and Trauma wounds, Pressure Ulcers and Leg Ulcers. The presentations can be tailored to support local guidelines and formularies.

Further presentations will be developed in future and from future issues of the journal creating a library of presentations for the road shows adding to the flexibility of the format.

Spend in the NHS has increased year on year on items such as dressings and bandages and there has been much effort expended to ensure the development of cost-effective strategies without compromising on quality to ensure optimal patient care.

The Greater Manchester Collaborative Procurement Hub (GMCPH) is a pathfinder hub set up to undertake the procurement of nonpay expenditure on behalf of the constituent stakeholders, including Primary Care Trusts (PCT) and Acute Hospital Trusts.
