There is no doubt that clinical infection causes death, distress and costs the NHS. There is a long history in the fight against bacterial contamination of wounds and there is still debate on how that fight should continue. Nevertheless, there are great strides in the knowledge of bacteria and their biofilms, and how antiseptics may help to reduce the NHS cost of £1 billion each year. Antibacterials can certainly make a difference as they quickly remove odour from a wound, which indicates that bacteria is also being removed, as this article shows.
