By the time this editorial features on the Wounds UK website the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) annual conference will just have closed - no doubt the event will have been a great success and would have helped to cement relationships between the wound healing organisations and individuals across Europe. Other conferences in the early summer of 2010 may be slightly 'lost' amid the general awareness and enthusiasm for the EWMA conference. One of these is the 4th International Interdisciplinary Conference on Posture and Wheeled Mobility to be held in Glasgow between June 7 and 9th 2010. This conference builds upon the original two conferences held in Dundee in the 1990's and a subsequent event in Exeter in 2005 and seeks to create Best Practice guidance for a range of issues related to posture and mobility. On the 8th June there will be a plenary session and workshop dedicated to pressure damage, the first time this topic has held a central place within the posture and mobility conference. Presentations will cover the causes of pressure damage, the new NPUAP-EPUAP clinical practice guidelines and current work on the laboratory evaluation of support surfaces. Here is an opportunity for pressure ulcers to be discussed among seating experts helping to integrate tissue viability with other disciplines who face challenges when facing clients with, or vulnerable to, pressure damage. Full details on this conference can be found at http://www.mobility2010.org/programme.asp.
While 2011 may seem a long way away, the months are passing quickly and we will all soon be considering conferences and events we wish to attend next year! The Tissue Viability Society has just announced its conference dates for 2011 which will take place over Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th April 2010 at the International Centre, Telford. For those who attended the 2010 event the International Centre was easy to travel to, had excellent on-site parking, a wide range of local walking distance hotels and superb lecture and exhibition facilities. Given the delegate response to this year's conference the TVS will return to Telford in 2011. Further details of the programme and speakers will be available later this summer.
The Wounds UK awards event will shortly take place on June 11th in Birmingham and I look forward to meeting many readers there. Of course you could always consider attending the meeting of the Welsh Wound Network the day before the Wounds UK awards ceremony? This meeting will be held in Aberystwyth University on June 10th and will feature presentations upon support surface evaluation and the release of a Welsh Wound Network factsheet on pressure ulcers. Details of this free event are available on www.welshwoundnetwork.org.
