The Tissue Viability modules at The University of Bradford have recently been updated in line with knowledge and skills required by the busy clinically based health care practitioner without compromising on the quality of the modules.

Courses

The University of Bradford offer three degree level modules including:

  • Interventions in limiting pressure damage
  • Interventions in wound management
  • Interventions in leg ulcer management

Each are awarded 20 credits at level 3 together they form the Certificate of Tissue Viability and can form part of the BSc provision the modules can be studies individually, sequentially or concurrently the modules start each September and run over two semesters.

The University of Bradford also run a Masters level module Wound debridement. This module enables the practitioner to enhance their practice and is based on the TVNA recommendations and in line with NICE guidance.

From 2008 the Tissue Viability courses will be run at M level where a variety of modules will be available to ensure the advanced practitioner with an interest in wound care will be able to choose the most appropriate pathway to achieve Masters degree.

The courses are led by a team of nationally recognised experts and is part of Bradford Wound Healing Unit ensuring the information is up to date and linked to current evidence, guidance and practice.

Postgraduate Cert/Diploma/MSc Wound Healing and Tissue Repair
The course has attracted healthcare professionals from the field of nursing, medicine, pharmacy, podiatry and the pharmaceutical industry. It offers the opportunity of studying at a distance alongside an international group of professionals from countries such as Holland, America, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and New Zealand. Students are required to attend the University campus once yearly only and it is imperative they have access to on-line facilities at home/work. All course content and module workbooks are available via the student home page on the WHRU web-site. Students may exit with a Postgraduate Certificate after 1 year and Postgraduate Diploma at completion of Year 2.

Level 3 tissue Viability Foundation Modules:- Foundation in Leg Ulcer Management, Pressure Ulcer Management and Diabetic Foot Ulcer Management
These are designed to introduce the non-graduate student to degree-level study. Each module is 16 weeks in length giving 30 credits at Level 3, offered as web-based distance learning stand-alone modules. Primarily targeted for nurses, they have a greater emphasis on clinical application and will provide students with an introduction to some of the module content which is covered in greater depth in the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair. The overall aim of each module is to promote the understanding of the management of patients with these wound types enabling the student to extend their knowledge and develop strategies to improve the patients outcome and quality of care.

CERTIFICATE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES are offered in Leg Ulcer Care and Tissue Viability commencing in either September, January or May. Theory is integrated into clinical practise through work based learning and clinical placements.

Each course runs one day per week over a 15 week period, at either diploma or degree level. On completion, the 30 academic credits gained can be incorporated into the Post Qualification Framework BA (Hons).

Wound Care Management (Tissue Viability) and Professional Development in Leg Ulcers short courses are offered at both level 2 and 3. At level 3 these modules may also be undertaken within the Continuing Professional Development programme BSc (Hons) Nursing. Additionally, a Tissue Viability module is available within the Community Healthcare Nursing programme and students can undertake this course as either a BSc or PG Dip degree. All teaching is undertaken by recognised leaders in this area of practice and who have national and international reputations for clinical, academic and research expertise.

All of the modules are lead and delivered by tissue viability experts. The modules encourage the student to critically reflect on practice and to consider alternative strategies for care delivery.

All local Tissue Viability Specialist Nurses teach on one or more of these courses, and have a strong influence on course content, management and delivery. A range of wound care courses are offered which accrue academic credit; some have flexible modes of delivery.

King's has an international reputation for research, and some of its nursing academics are key players in the programme for Woundcare Research for Appropriate Products (WRAP) and hold key positions within EWMA (European Wound Management Association).

The Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences at Kingston University and St George's, University of London offer a range of modules related to tissue viability at both diploma and degree level. The modules are applicable to a variety of professional groups, providing participants can achieve the required learning outcomes of the module(s). Participants study on a part-time basis and can chose to undertake individual modules or study for a pathway specific award - Diploma in Healthcare Practice (Tissue Viability) or BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Practice (Tissue viability). Blended learning using web-based material is utilised for the Principles of Wound Healing and Tissue Repair and Tissue Viability modules, and is being developed with other modules in the pathway.

Certificate/Diploma/MSc in Health Studies in Tissue Viability or Dermatology

The Certificate in Health Studies, (Levels 2 and 3), comprises 3 modules. Integral to each pathway will be a clinical skills component.

Students undertaking the Diploma will, in addition to the 3 modules of their chosen pathway complete a research module and 2 other modules of their choice.

Masters students will on completion of the Diploma be required to submit a 20,0000 word dissertation on a pathway related subject.

BSc (Hons) Tissue Viability
MSc Advancing Practice Tissue Viability

The University of Hertfordshire offers a wide range of tissue viability awards with a flexible modular approach including distance learning options. Modules are offered at Diploma, Degree and Masters level. Students study on a part time basis and may chose to exit with a short 15 credit module through to the longer academic awards of BSc (Hons) or MSc. Modules focus specifically on a broad range of topics related to tissue viability, are firmly related to clinical practice and are led by a team of nationally recognised lecturers.

Both Classroom based and Distance Learning modules are supported by the University's managed learning environment (MLE) called StudyNet. This is an on-line learning environment which can be accessed from any computer, anywhere in the world. A vast range of learning resources is available to students through StudyNet whilst facilities such as email and class discussion forum enable them to communicate with the teaching team and other students outside of classroom hours. The on-line, 24 hour-a-day availability of StudyNet enables learning to continue well beyond traditional course times, ensuring that students can make the most of the excellent teaching and study skills support on offer.

Developing Skin Camouflage Practice

A 6 day accredited short course which gives an insight into the complex psychological and social needs of those individuals requiring skin camouflage and teaches the practical skills required for effective camouflage application.

The Tissue Viability Pathway

This pathway provides the opportunity for practitioners to advance their knowledge, skills and expertise in the assessment, prevention and management of patients with tissue viability needs within a context of research and evidence-based practice in order to promote best practice and effective clinical decision making.

By studying a variety of contemporary issues surrounding wound healing and skin management. Students can then select specialist module options, leg ulcer management, pressure ulcer prevention, management of skin conditions and contemporary practice in burns, plastic/reconstructive surgery relevant to their area of work. This course also provides the opportunity to undertake the Specialist Practitioner Qualification

Tissue Viability and Leg Ulcer Management (Level 3) courses taught over 9 days and suitable for a range of a range of Health Care Professionals. These courses are intended for health care workers who hold a professional registration and have an interest and/or background in tissue viability and or leg ulcer management. Students will increase their ability to study independently and acquire an in depth knowledge of the care of patients.

Modules are run as a combination of locally taught days and central conference days, attracting national speakers. Locally taught days are likely to run in Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth and Cornwall. Conference venues will be in Plymouth and Taunton, and students will be allocated both their conference and local sites on registration. Health care professionals may attend the conference days independently, without undertaking the whole module.

NUR 181 Nursing Assessment and Management of Leg Ulceration
An 8-month distance learning course designed for predominantly web-based delivery. The course will enable practising nurses to assess, plan and manage the care of leg ulcer patients. Key Features include: One introductory study day held in September, Distance learning and web-based theoretical package that students will progressively work through whilst developing a reflective portfolio, A work-based competency framework for achievement of clinical competencies, One tutor-led skills workshop held at appropriate venues in Scotland , Two optional one-day placements to a vascular-led and dermatology-led leg ulcer clinics.

NUR 201 Principles of Tissue Viability
A 3-month, web-based, distance learning module. The module will enable health professionals to assess, plan and deliver care to patients with tissue viability related problems. Key features include: Theory enabling assessment, diagnosis and care planning for patients with wounds, Theory enabling identification of risk related to skin integrity and to develop and promote appropriate prevention strategies for skin breakdown, There will be useful opportunities to make contact with other nurses and develop collaborative links potentially across the UK and beyond, Students will develop critical analytical skills to assist in decision making in practice.
